PVA is a versatile material for adhesives, valued for its strong bonding and film-forming properties. Its hydroxyl groups form hydrogen bonds with polar substrates like paper, wood, and glass, creating durable bonds with shear strength ≥3 MPa. PVA adhesives dry quickly (10–15 minutes), ideal for high-speed packaging lines, and form clear, colorless films that do not yellow over time. Adjusting the degree of hydrolysis tunes water resistance: fully hydrolyzed PVA (99% DH) is suitable for outdoor woodworking, while partially hydrolyzed (88% DH) dissolves in cold water for temporary bonding. Plasticizers like glycerol can enhance flexibility for leather or fabric bonding. PVA adhesives are also eco-friendly, with low VOC content and biodegradability under aerobic conditions, making them preferred in sustainable packaging and bookbinding.
